About TekTrakker Statistics The core calculation within TekTrakker is the Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF) of each device population reported to the model/series level. All calculations are made based on the universe of reported devices and their associated reported failures. Unlike bench testing or survey driven reporting, this methodology is regarded as the "gold standard" for evaluation of device failure. Standards groups such as SixSigma, IEEE and many others widely advocate for field data failure experience as the preferred metric for analysis. TekTrakker continuously updates the database with new reporting as soon as it is accepted. Products with no reported failures are noted as such. It is up to users to make their own judgements about how to use data reported, and particularly to take into consideration the volume of reports. Datasets are carefully evaluated by TekTrakker for quality before being accepted into the database. Many reports are rejected for either insufficient asset description, or inability to tie a hardware failure to a device type. TekTrakker makes every attempt to include only high-quality data, however it is the obligation of members to submit quality data so that all Members can trust the resulting metrics. MTBF and MTTF (Mean Time To Failure) MTBF is not the same as the Mean Time To Failure (MTTF). This is a common misunderstanding which leads many users to assume that if a device reports a MTBF of 60 months - that none of that model will fail for at least 60 months. In fact, the MTBF is an average of all reported failures which may occur at any time from the first moment of equipment deployment and by definition includes failures which have occured far earlier than the 60 months of the calculation. MTBF is a guide to the problems already experienced across the portfolio of devices over the timeframe submitted. It should be considered as a minimum level of failure rate - as logic tells us that if materials and mechanical items wear out over time, the failure rates will increase - thus pointing towards an eventual senescence. The earliest onset of problems (MTTF) and the later onset of problems due to senescence will be visible through TekTrakker including problems specific to parts. All that is needed is sufficient history. |
